What Can We Offer You?
Within the society, we offer students the opportunity to present breakfast and drive-time shows, talk or news shows, as well as other specialist shows. We're also working in close partnership with the DJ Society to provide student DJ's with the opportunity to play on the station and showcase the talent that Southampton and Solent University have to offer. Outside of presenting, we have opportunities for students to get involved with journalism, be it producing our hourly news updates, or writing articles to be published here on the website. we also Radio Sonar works closely with the other branches of Sonar Media, which include magazine, television, and film, as detailed below.
Voice FM are Southampton’s local community radio station. Broadcasting from St. Mary’s in the city, across Southampton on 103.9 FM and online, the station went live in 2011 to provide a service to the local community, both as a hit music station and an education and training service. Voice FM plays a variety of current chart hits, rock, indie, & alternative music throughout the day, as well showcasing local bands with a “Homgrown Hit” taking centre stage on our playlist each week. Our members at Radio Sonar are lucky enough to work closely with Voice FM and their team, members even get the opportunity to broadcast on their station from 9pm till 11pm, Monday through Friday. This is a MAJOR opportunity for Radio Sonar and it’s members!
Student Radio Association
Radio Sonar are members of the Student Radio Association, or the SRA. The SRA is a volunteer-run representative body which supports and acts on behalf of the UK student radio community. They encourage and facilitate communication between student stations, to assist in their development, and to offer support and advice to new stations. Their two flagship events are the Student Radio Awards, held each November, and the National Student Radio Conference which brings together nearly five-hundred students over three days to learn, develop and network. We encourage all of our members to get involved in these events. Our station manager, Abbie Brock, is the current Regional Officer for the South East region.
